Students are learning at lightning speed. Research shows us that they scan material rather than reading every word. They multitask and look for the direct answer. This is where teachers can help students learn by recognizing the ways students learn. When presenting digital media or graphics in their classroom they should be cognizant of these learning patterns. Many people use an F pattern when looking at materials online (Neilson, 2006). Teachers should put the most important information in this pattern. Graphic design will help students stay engaged by catching their attention and making the most important information stand out.

Personally, I use graphic design in my classroom to help students learn but also as a fun engaging activity for students to show what they’ve learned or already know about a topic. Students are using the Google suite of products and are familiar with the tools available to them. They easily adapt information and put it into graphics to display their knowledge. I then print these in color and display them around our classroom. Students love seeing their work displayed and they often spark conversation amongst themselves. This further promotes learning within the classroom.
