Creating the Unit Plan on how my kindergarten students could help the earth, specifically their playground, was a great learning experience. I integrated ISTE, Common Core, and IL state standards into the unit. I was even able to focus the unit on service learning.
Students who take part in service learning projects retain more information and learn more than academic skills. They learn to collaborate, preserve, and problem solve. Kindergarten students are able to rise to these expectations when specific learning targets are given. Students are even able to drive their own instruction. This is a great way for teachers to facilitate learning and students to truly retain what they are learning.
I am happy that I am able to share this unit with my peers. It offers insight to service learning and integrating multiple standards into a single unit. This is an opportunity for my peers to learn from me and my insights into educational best practices. I hope that by posting this in my blog they will be able to learn from me as well.
You can access a copy of my unit in this blog post.
