Routines...What Are Those?

I started my first week of my Genius Hour Project working on my first cross stitch project. It took me what felt like an entire evening to get the wooden frame onto the fabric. I became frustrated and ended up needing an extra set of hands to get it on. How do people do this two handed?
Next, came figuring out how to stitch the end piece of string into the back of the fabric so that my design wouldn't unravel. This took a lot of patience and trying to find the correct holes to put my needle back through. I had to redo my work about 10 times before I did it correctly. Once I did get it I was very proud of myself.
Then came the counting. You have to count everything. Whether you go up, down, to the right or left, it is endless counting. I messed this up too a couple of times but eventually got the feeling down. Sadly, I was able to get three rows of green done and then headed to bed. That was hard work!
What I know now that I didn't know before was that I need glasses. I had a feeling that I needed to wear glasses for a while now but this project confirmed it. I also learned that setting a routine for kids is easy but for myself is hard. Setting aside time for me to do something is difficult because I don't think it's important; or rather doing laundry or something for another member of my family is more important. This is something I look forward to changing. Having "me" time is important.
I also figured out that learning something new is hard. This puts learning into perspective for me in the eyes of my students. School has always come easy to me. I am very lucky that I never struggled. This project has allowed me to experience learning in maybe some ways my students do. It has given me more compassion and understanding for their struggles. It also has helped me to understand their avoidance. Who wants to sit in math class when it's hard? Not me. Same thing with cross stitch. I was ready to throw the towel-in after an hour of no success. But then I got one row, then 2, and finally 3. I stopped with the feeling of encouragement.
I look forward trying to knit and crochet. I tried a tutorial on crocheting and it makes my hands do funny things! Turns out my husband is a natural. He did it with no issues at all.
